Popular Canadian psychologist, professor, writer and YouTuber Jordan Peterson posted a podcast episode on Bitcoin. The highly anticipated episode, titled “Bitcoin: The Future of Money?” was recorded on May 13, 2021, but was only released this week.

The episode is an hour and a half of in-depth technical, philosophical and economic conversation on Bitcoin between author Dr. Peterson and notable bitcoiners John Vallis, Der Gigi, Richard James and Robert Breedlove.

During the episode, Dr. Peterson delivered numerous takes that demonstrated a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Bitcoin:

“It’s a very interesting idea that Bitcoin provides an incorruptible language of value, preferable to gold. “

Aside from his somewhat curvy, albeit well articulated, pontification on disparate topics, Dr Peterson has always asked Gigi and Richard James direct questions about Bitcoin. Use their answers to better frame their arguments and reduce the scope of their generally broad understanding.

In the episode, Peterson often assimilated the views of his guests, frequently telling them about key Bitcoin traits as a way to follow his own understanding:

“Then [Bitcoin] is completely transparent. It’s completely distributed. There is no centralized authority. He cannot be cracked. It cannot be stolen. It does not swell. It cannot be inflated. It is not subject to any form of overt administrative control.

On the ethical clarification that can result from the low time preference lifestyle that Bitcoin promotes, Peterson concluded:

“Bitcoin’s very act of sanctifying individual sovereignty actually inclines individuals to do something good rather than something bad. It’s not just neutral as Gigi said, there is an intrinsic ethic in Bitcoin that is more likely to tilt it in a positive direction.

Popular Thinkers and Bitcoin section

During the episode, Peterson demonstrated not only a strong preliminary understanding of Bitcoin, but also a desire to be corrected while showing an interest in learning more. This is in stark contrast to other public intellectuals (most recently Elon Musk) who, when pressed by the Bitcoin community, often fail to display a sufficiently deep understanding or signal a continuing and growing curiosity, traits so often found and celebrated. by Bitcoin maximalists.

Discussing Musk’s misguided comments on Bitcoin’s power consumption, Peterson said:

“What should happen is that all the energy spent in producing Bitcoin and maintaining the system should be more than recouped by the increased efficiency of every system that uses Bitcoin as a transactional device. And so there will be. a net gain of energy not a net loss of energy if you calculate it over the whole system. And so it is a mistake to just look at the cost of generating bitcoin without considering how efficient bitcoin is. would produce. “

Peterson’s frequently shared online lectures cover just about every topic imaginable. Infamous, he sometimes finds himself the subject and center of controversy for his thoughts, but the freedom to explore ideas without censorship is a big part of the Bitcoin Ethos.

While such a public, multidisciplinary figure is a welcome contribution to the community, and will be worth watching his thoughts on Bitcoin unfold, it is important as a decentralized network not to put any thinker on a pedestal.
