Minneapolis Federal Reserve Chairman Neel Kashkari had harsh words for the emerging crypto asset market on Tuesday.
The central banker said he saw no use cases for bitcoin BTCUSD, -0.19%, the world’s No.1 crypto, and referred to the broader digital asset sector as being largely linked to fraud and hype.
Cryptocurrency is 95% made up of fraud, hype, noise and confusion, Kashkari said, speaking at the annual Pacific Northwest Regional Economic Summit in Big Sky, Mt.
Bitcoin prices were at $ 44,993, down 2.4% on CoinDesk on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ether ETHUSD, -1.20% on the Ethereum blockchain was changing hands at $ 3,069, up from 3%, while the DOGEUSD, -1.00% dogecoin meme coin was trading at around 30 cents, down 5.1%.
Crypto gained ground among institutional investors in 2021 but is still considered speculative and highly risky trade compared to traditional markets.
Kashkari also shared his take on monetary policy plans, noting that he still sees a lot of slack in the US labor market and suggesting he may need a few more solid jobs reports before to be inclined to support a push to scale support central bank monthly purchases of $ 120 billion of treasury bills and mortgage-backed securities.
The comments from the Minneapolis Fed chairmen come as there is growing talk of when to pull Fed homes in the COVID era and possibly raise interest rates as the economy tries to recover from the pandemic.
On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.79% and the S&P 500 SPX Index, -0.71% ended five consecutive winning streaks, with some attributing at least part of the day’s declines to concerns growing concerns about a rollback of easy money policies. .
For his part, Kashkari said it would be reasonable to start cutting bond purchases by the end of 2021, if the labor market cooperates.
In July, the United States created 943,000 jobs, which some saw as a sign that the economic recovery was gaining momentum, despite the latest onslaught of the delta variant of COVID-19.
