NEW DELHI: Will Argentina become the first major economy to take over and treat cryptocurrency as legal tender? Well, President Alberto Fernandez is definitely open to the idea. In an interview earlier this week with Black Box, a show hosted by Argentine journalist Julio Leiva, Fernandez had indicated his will when asked about the adoption of cryptocurrency as legal tender in Argentina. Fernandez said that as a result of discussions taking place around the world on the value and use of cryptocurrencies as legal tender, considerable interest has also been generated in Argentina. He added that the matter should be treated with care and acknowledged that he had limited knowledge on the subject of cryptocurrencies. It is a subject that must be treated with care. In my case, because it (cryptocurrencies) is still unknown to me. Some still do not understand how this money materialized. These doubts that I have are shared by many. That’s why the project didn’t expand further, Fernandez said in the interview, quoted by the bitcoin.com portal. He believes cryptocurrency could solve the country’s inflation problem. His optimism is not without caution, however. He admits that cryptography is a difficult subject to broach given that it has been associated with scams in the past. Another country on the South American continent, El Salvador, has already given bitcoin legal value.
