Regulation may be the answer to the dangers of investing in the exciting but ruthless cryptocurrency technology, but most projects do more than mindlessly generate wealth (“The crypto wild west” needs a good sheriff “, FT View, August 14).

Consider, for example, Cardano’s work to revolutionize blockchain in Ethiopia – digitizing everything from voting to retail payments – or Tezos and its “smart contracts” that enable secure identity verification for businesses.

I argue that many popular reviews of crypto are outdated compared to current work in the blockchain space.

However, caution must be exercised because all projects do not have the same ambition in their social missions. But it’s even more important that cynics take a look at projects that pave the way for the future of finance: there is often more to history than just a coin.
