Bitcoin prices topped $ 50,000 for the first time in three months on Monday.
The cryptocurrency recently traded at $ 50,200, up about 2.4% from its level 24 hours ago, according to CoinDesk.
Monday’s moves mark the latest milestone for which it has regained some ground since peaking at around $ 64,000 in mid-April and then falling alongside other digital currencies. After hitting a low of $ 29,608 last month, bitcoin has climbed 70%.
A surge in enthusiasm from retail investors had helped bitcoin soar in the first few months of the year. But prices then took a hit after a series of setbacks, including Tesla Inc. which said it would no longer accept bitcoin as a form of payment for its electric vehicles and that Chinese regulators stepped up crackdowns on trading in cryptocurrency in the country.
Lately, some fund managers and institutions have reported more support for cryptocurrency. PayPal Holdings Inc. announced on Monday that it will introduce a service that allows UK customers to buy, hold and sell bitcoin, as well as ethereum, litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. PayPal rolled out the same functionality for US customers in November.
