Recognition characters in Apex Legends are information experts. They are able to discover the future locations of the rings and, in one form or another, reveal enemy locations around them. Many Recognition Legends are considered the best in the game, but Crypto, the game’s off-grid hacker, has chronically struggled with a low pick rate. Much of this is due to his kit, which revolves heavily around a drone that Crypto himself has to be stationary to use.

There have been discussions previously about how to make Crypto less vulnerable while still providing crucial information to its team, but Reddit user Idiroon’s overhaul has recently gained in popularity. The redesign would make Crypto more difficult for other reconnaissance enemies to discover when using his drone and add versatility to the way his drone is used. Crypto’s Ultimate was left untouched in this overhaul.

As it stands, there is only one way to use Crypto’s drone. Players must manually fly the drone within a certain radius around Crypto before leaving it in position to act as a security camera or recall it in its holster. As part of this fan-made revamp, however, the drone would gain three additional autopilot modes.

Primary mode would allow the drone to stay a short distance from Crypto as it traversed the map. This would allow the drone to act as a constant sweep, but only for a short distance immediately in front of and slightly above Crypto.

The second mode is the patrol mode. When activated in this mode, the drone will fly above the crypto and circle it within a defined radius while scanning outward. It would be best to use it immediately after a team fight to detect other incoming enemies as your team loots.

The last mode would be scout mode. Scout mode would allow Crypto to ping a location for the drone to automatically fly in a straight line, also scanning the path there. The drone can be blocked by buildings and walls in this mode.

Currently, Crypto’s passive allows his entire team to see what the drone highlights, but other Scout Legends like Bloodhound and Seer offer similar information and have additional passives. With this overhaul, Crypto gains a passive that seems much more canonically appropriate to the character. Crypto’s lore makes it clear that it is obsessed with security and stays off the network, so it makes sense that it has a liability that reflects that story.

The new passive would keep Crypto unmarked by other Reconnaissance Legend abilities while he manually activates the drone. He could still be tagged while moving or using one of his drone’s autopilot modes.

The Apex community on Reddit has responded positively and many have expressed hope that some variations of this fan revamp will be implemented in the game.
