An Ethereum-based game called Axie Infinity has brought in millions of real-world dollars to the company that created it, with people mostly from developing countries playing with the game’s colorful and competitive creatures to try and win money. ‘money for themselves.
Inspired by Pokmon, the game Axie Infinity is seeing an increase in the number of players looking to participate in its model of play in order to win. Its growing popularity is part of the reason why Sky Mavis, the creator of the game, has seen its revenue increase. The Vietnam-based games studio has recorded $ 485 million in revenue since July, eclipsing the $ 21 million it had earned since launching in 2018, according to a report released this week by Bloomberg. Daily active users reached over one million in August.
Two crypto analysts told Insider’s Vicky Ge Huang three ways to profit from Axie’s growth.
Players can earn two types of tokens – Smooth Love Potions and Axie Infinity Shards – by raising, raising, and fighting virtual creatures called Axies. SLP and AXS tokens can be used in-game or can be sold on a crypto exchange. Axes are non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, that can be sold or bought.
The Bloomberg report says most of the players are based in developing countries whose economies have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Philippines, Brazil and Venezuela. In “the pursuit of a new source of income during the COVID pandemic,” thousands of people in developing countries have played the game, according to a white paper updated in December on the Axie Infinity website.
A rise in the price of the AXS has enabled people in distressed economies to earn money. Demand from the Philippines has grown enough for the Binance crypto exchange to offer SLP-peso trading, according to the report, and there is also the appeal of cryptocurrencies in places where local currencies are weak.
Players need three Axies to get started, but the buy-in costs can be steep, at around $ 200 for each creature. But sponsors can step in and allow people to play in exchange for reduced income. Such arrangements have also increased Sky Mavis’ revenue as it takes a reduction every time an Axie changes hands and collects a fee when players breed new creatures, according to the report.
Bloomberg highlighted a player from Manila who, in his first two weeks of playing at Axie Infinity, won over 37,000 pesos ($ 732), three times what he would have earned at the IT position he was made redundant in July.
The game does have some detractors, however. Vanessa Cao, founder of venture capital firm BTX Capital, told Bloomberg that the Axie model is unhealthy and unsustainable, with people spending hundreds of dollars up front to gamble.
