The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says crypto assets, like bitcoin, are issued privately with substantial risk, and “making them equivalent to a national currency is a bad shortcut.” The crypto community disagrees.

IMF Says Bitcoin Is Privately Issued Crypto With Substantial Risks, That It Is Not Recommended For Use As Legal Tender

The International Monetary Fund tweeted about the crypto assets on Saturday, saying they are privately issued, carry substantial risk and are not recommended to be used as legal tender. The IMF wrote: “Privately issued crypto-assets like bitcoin carry substantial risk. Making them equivalent to a national currency is a shortcut that is not recommended.

The IMF tweet refers to a blog post written on July 26 by two of its legal advisers, as Bitcoin.com News previously reported. In the blog post titled “Cryptoassets as National Currency? A Step Too Far ”, the authors warned against the risks of making bitcoin legal tender as El Salvador did. One of the concerns mentioned was that “monetary policy would lose weight” because “central banks cannot fix interest rates on a foreign currency”.

Many people on social media have laughed at the IMF for calling bitcoin a ‘private issue’. One Twitter user pointed out that the IMF “is presenting BTC (an open source public protocol) as an asset” issued by the private sector “to discredit its legitimacy over national currencies, which are actually privately issued.” .

Some have argued that fiat currencies carry more “substantial risk” than bitcoin. “Government issued fiduciary assets like the US dollar carry substantial risk. Especially when they are on loan from intergovernmental organizations with a history of bankrupt countries, ”one Twitter user said.

Noting that bitcoin and crypto compete as an international reserve asset, a third Twitter user described:

The IMF is getting nervous because businesses and individuals are diversifying their wealth into bitcoin and cryptocurrencies instead of their Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).

Some people have said that the IMF is becoming an irrelevant organization. DTAP Capital founder Dan Tapiero predicted: “The IMF will not exist in 10 years.
