Tennis star Naomi Osaka says Dogecoin got her interested in crypto

The growing interest in the cryptocurrency markets has caught the attention of tennis star Naomi Osaka.

The catalyst for his interest? The cryptocurrency that started out as a joke.

I was actually just talking with my cryptocurrency agent, Osaka told Bloomberg last week. I know everything is getting bigger online. I remember reading about Dogecoin, there will be something new and interesting that will pop up.

Osaka is a savvy businesswoman who passed Serena Williams as the world’s highest-paid female athlete last year, with much of her income coming from the tennis court. She has deals with Nike NKE, -1.83%, Sweetgreen, Barbie and Nissan, among others.

She cites the limited time professional athletes have to make money as the impetus for her interest in finance.

As athletes our career isn’t that long, so I like to be really smart with that, Osaka said. I like it when my agent tells me there are opportunities.

My boyfriend really likes to wake up in the morning and check his stuff. I’m personally not the type to do that, but I can see the appeal, Osaka continued.

Superagent Leigh Steinberg, who represents NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Tua Tagovailoa, recently detailed the difficulties of a limited earnings window for some professional athletes in an interview with MarketWatch.

Naomi Osaka says she has had conversations with her agent about investing in cryptocurrency, but did not say whether or not she bought any.

Osaka, which competes in the US Open this week, is the second highest paid tennis player in the world, behind Switzerland’s Roger Federer.

Dogecoin DOGEUSD, + 0.98% is up 8.270% in the last 12 months, but down 8.8% in the last three months.

Not all investors are cryptocurrency bulls because one billionaire predicts cryptocurrencies will go to zero.

And even Dogecoin founder Billy Markus said earlier this year that the rise in cryptos is not something I can relate to.
