US Treasury Urges Global Crypto Data Sharing Rules In Upcoming Report on $ 3.5 trillion Budget Bill

NEW DELHI: The Biden administration is working to introduce global crypto data sharing rules in the upcoming report on the $ 3.5 trillion budget bill. This new proposal aims to ensure tax compliance on cryptocurrency transactions by introducing more rules. The proposal would require crypto companies, including exchanges, to report foreign owners of U.S. accounts. This will allow the US administration to share information with global trading partners. The U.S. Treasury Green Paper mentions that the global nature of the crypto market offers U.S. taxpayers the ability to conceal income using offshore crypto exchanges and wallet providers. U.S. taxpayers also avoid the tax burden by creating entities through which they can act. Third-party reporting is therefore essential to strengthen voluntary tax compliance. Greenbook further explains that in order to gain access to the information, U.S. officials must be able to provide the same data to other countries about their own citizens with U.S. accounts. This is part of the tax information exchange agreement, according to the publication. The U.S. administration’s drive to impose new rules on cryptocurrency transactions came shortly after the Senate passed the $ 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill on August 11. An outcry has been created over the broader definition of a broker in the bill who must file reports with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The definition of broker would include software developers, transaction validators, and node operators that do not collect the information required by the IRS. As a result, many concerns have been raised by lawmakers and crypto stakeholders about the definition of broker in the $ 1.2 trillion bill. Concerns were allayed by a US Treasury official saying non-brokers such as miners and software developers will not be targeted even without amendments.
