Students are now turning to crypto to bridge the financial gap associated with schooling. It is not surprising that the cost of schooling has increased tremendously over the years. Now more than ever, students are graduating with tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. But even the massive loans that students have to take out to pay for their education don’t cover everything.

Things like food, rent, and travel are big problems for students. And by the time their student loans arrive, there are sometimes gaps that need to be filled with funds from other sources. Historically, students have chosen part-time jobs to fill these gaps. But with the pandemic, the part-time job market has been volatile to say the least. Students also generally have to rely on parents to fill this gap. But the incomes of parents affected by the pandemic have prompted students to find another way to close this gap. This is where crypto comes in.

Using crypto to bridge the gap

The pandemic and school closures have left many students with free time as countries have gone into lockdown. Unable to work and with dwindling savings, many students have had to turn to other means of income to supplement their loans. The loans typically cover around 58% of student expenses, according to this report.

The Save The Student survey shows that students are increasingly looking for other ways to earn money to get by in college. Data shows that the number of students turning to crypto to bridge this financial gap has tripled in just one year. The number has dropped from the 2% who reported investing in crypto last year to 6% this year.

Get a head start

The survey mainly found that students were generally poorly prepared when it came to finances. So even though more students were investing in crypto, they were not doing their due diligence before investing. This usually leads to investment mistakes, which in turn results in a loss of money in the market.
