Crypto fear and greed index

There are three main drivers behind any type of market where trading takes place.

Whether it is stocks, bonds, precious metals, commodities or cryptocurrencies, they are all affected by these three factors:

Fundamentals

It is the macroeconomic conditions in which the market exists that gives it shape and context. Conditions are dynamic and can change quickly or slowly over time. Examples include elections, wars, natural disasters, and economic factors such as inflation, reckless government spending, and the impression of money on the run.

Techniques

Markets are made up of people, and people are creatures of habit. As each of us adopts behaviors of buying, selling and holding assets individually, broader behavioral patterns are formed on an aggregate scale that reflect collective actions. While no one can fully predict future market movements, these technical models can inform decisions about what is likely to happen next and the best course of action to achieve the greatest likelihood of success.

Feeling

People are not only creatures of habit, they are creatures of emotions. Arguably very few people have the discipline and the determined will to buy, sell, and hold in a market based purely on pure logic. People tend to trust their “gut” or their pure emotions. Anyone who doubts the role emotions play in markets and decision-making need only remember this quote from famous economist John Maynard Keynes:

“Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.” It is because of this emotion-driven third element of the marketplace that software developers Gregor Krambs and Victor Tobies designed and created the Crypto Fear & Greed Index (FGI).

The FGI is a free, easy-to-understand interactive dashboard that provides a daily snapshot of overall market sentiment based on various weighted factors including: volatility, market volume, social media, dominance, and trends.

The software automatically retrieves the internet and updates these factors every 24 hours.

The algorithm then calculates the FGI score for the day and then plots it on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 to 50 representing varying degrees of fear and 50 to 100 representing varying degrees of greed.

Here you can see the current fear and greed index.

As described by CNN Business, the behavior of the crypto market is very emotional.

People tend to go greedy when the market is on the rise resulting in FOMO (Fear of Missing Something). Plus, people often sell their coins in the irrational reaction to seeing red numbers. With our Fear and Greed Index, we try to save you from your own overreacting emotional reactions. There are two simple assumptions:

Extreme fear can be a sign that investors are overly worried. It could be a buying opportunity. When investors get too greedy, it means the market needs to undergo a correction. Therefore, we analyze the current market sentiment and analyze the numbers in a simple counter from 0 to 100. Zero means “Extreme Fear”, while 100 means “Extreme Greed”.

Another cool feature of the FGI website is that you can look back and see the trendline oscillate over time. It helps to do this and correlate the movement of the line with specific fundamental and technical events.

You can consult the chronology of the last seven days, months, three months, year and the “max” view which goes back to the creation of the FGI at the beginning of 2018. This graph relates to the past year.

The FGI is a useful tool and a single point of data to help hodlers and traders assess crypto markets with a little less emotion and a little more understanding in times of uncertainty.

On the reverse

Any market model, whether it is “stock-to-flow” or “Pi Cycle Top indicator”, is only as good as its inputs. All models should be viewed with a grain of salt and should only be used as a further benchmark data point – not as the sole reason to buy or sell an asset.
