An obscure, memes-inspired cryptocurrency suddenly spiked in price after Elon Musk shared a photo of his new dog.
The Floki Inu coin hit an all-time high on Monday slowly after the tech billionaire tweeted the image of the Shiba Inu puppy, accompanied by the legend Floki arrived.
The 150% price hike was reflected in other alternative cryptocurrencies with similar names, including Floki Shiba and Super Floki.
Despite the massive price increases, they all remain off the list of the 2,000 most valuable cryptocurrencies, according to the CoinMarketCaps price index.
This isn’t the first time that a tweet from Mr. Musk has shaken the crypto markets, having already helped push dogecoin to new records earlier this year when it appeared on Saturday Night Live.
The world’s most famous memes-based currency was created in 2013 as a joke about the booming cryptocurrency space pioneered by bitcoin.
He was inspired by the Shiba Inu Doge meme and quickly gained attention for his fun loving, philanthropic community that grew around him.
As a self-proclaimed meme lover, Mr. Musk also took an interest in it and even bought some for his toddler son X A-Xii so he could grow up to be a toddler.
He also joked that the cryptocurrency could become the native currency of the internet, as well as potentially on Mars when a human colony is finally established there.
Every now and then I make dogecoin jokes, but they’re really just jokes, he said during a Q&A on the Clubhouse app earlier this year.
But fate loves irony … The most entertaining outcome is often the most likely outcome, and arguably the most entertaining, and the most ironic outcome would be for Dogecoin to become Earth’s currency in the future.
Mr. Musk is currently the second richest person on the planet, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, with a net worth of around $ 200 billion.
Beyond the stocks of SpaceX, Tesla and its other companies, the only thing he claims to own of significant value is bitcoin, Ethereum (ether) and dogecoin.
