How does the Apple v. Epic Games could be bullish for Bitcoin

[ad_1]

A long-awaited decision on the legal battle between Apple and Epic Games could have major implications for Bitcoin and the crypto market. In August 2020, these two titans entered a legal battle over Epic’s alleged breach of the developer agreement with its popular game Fortnite.

As former Amazon Studios director Matthew Ball said, the move was a loss for the video game company. Epic Games lost 9 of the 10 counts, but Apple could have lost a much bigger battle as it now has to allow developers to include payment alternatives to its Apple Pay option. The court ruled:

(Apple has been) permanently barred and directed to prohibit developers from including in their apps and metadata buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms, in addition to in-app purchases and communication with customers via touchpoints obtained voluntarily from customers through account registration in the app.

With the current deal, Apple has the right to take about 30% of App Store purchases and about 30% of in-game items. The company has deliberately prevented developers from including their own payment options to keep the costs. benefits of this agreement.

According to these calculations, Bitcoin and a Lightning Network implementation would be a much better deal for businesses and developers launching apps in the App Store. The lawsuit could cost Epic Games, in addition to the already high fees collected by Apple, more than $ 4 million in damages for failing to honor its agreement with the tech giant.

Are Apple Mistakes Bitcoin (BTC) Gains?

In the crypto market, some people have already recognized the potential of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to bring changes to the Apple app ecosystem. CNBC Crypto Trader host Ran Neuner commented on the following via Twitter:

This is HUGE for Crypto. Apple has dictated the payment mechanism for years, now the door is open for new payment methods !! The market does not yet realize it.

Apple’s behavior was partially found to be anti-competitive by the court, as usual in legal matters, the end could mark another beginning. Either party’s appeal process is open and could result in changes to the original decision that already doesn’t seem beneficial on the whole, according to Ball:

() we have a situation where, at a minimum, alternative payments are painful, with unclear and potentially none benefits, and to the extent that the benefits exist, they are concentrated among the bigger developers, not the smaller ones.

Over the past few months, Apple has seen strong opposition on several fronts. In addition to its payment practices, the company has been questioned for its attempts to invade the privacy of its users. This strengthens the case for Bitcoin payments and other forms of use cases that can take advantage of open networks, censorship resistance, and transparency.

I agree with that. @Apple must do more than just “listen”, it must completely abandon its plans to backdoor into systems that provide vital protections to the public. Don’t make us fight for basic privacy rights. Https://t.co/n4adiy6f0n
