NEW DELHI: A bronze statue of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym of the founder of Bitcoin, was unveiled on September 17 in a business park near the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. The imposing statue pays homage to the anonymous creator of the world’s first cryptocurrency. The bust of the bronze statue is placed on the engraved stone plinth, bearing the name of Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity is so far unknown. The creators of the statue, Reka Gargrely and Tamas Gilly, have succeeded in the challenge of representing a human form of a mysterious and unknown person. Gilly expressed his jubilation by saying that he hopes he has conveyed the intrinsic idea of Bitcoin that it belongs to everyone and none at the same time through the representation of the sculpture. The finely polished face of the statue which shows its own reflection is true to this claim. The statue is wrapped in a bronze hoodie that prominently bears the Bitcoin logo. Andras Gyrofi, initiator of the project and Bitcoin reporter, said people revere Nakamoto as the founding father and god of the cryptocurrency market. Event organizers even invited Nakamoto to the unveiling ceremony, hoping to meet the real creator. However, among the hundreds of visitors who flocked to the ceremony, none claimed to be Nakamoto. Gyrofi said the statue is a token of respect for the founder and aims to raise awareness about blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Donations valued at $ 10,000 were collected by Gyrofi along with four other Hungarian cryptocurrency organizations to fund the construction of the statue. Bitcoin, which was created in 2008, was named after Satoshi Nakamoto as the author of his white paper which was published shortly thereafter. Cryptocurrency was developed to move beyond the traditional form of centralized finance by cutting out middlemen and developing peer-to-peer networks.
