Stocks falter as China’s crackdown crumbles crypto: Markets shroud

(Bloomberg) – Stocks have struggled to tread after China stepped up its broad regulatory crackdown on cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, Ether, and other digital tokens have plummeted.

In another blow to investor sentiment, the world’s second largest economy said crypto-related transactions would now be considered illicit financial activity. Traders have been wary of what Chinese regulators might target next as the government also tightens its grip on sectors ranging from private education to digital games, e-cigarettes, real estate and insurance.

News from China certainly has an impact on the markets as it can shake up market sentiment, but the actual effect of another Chinese ban has minimal impact on the underlying structure of the market at this point, a said Clara Medalie, research manager at data provider Kaiko.

S&P 500 technology stocks fell, while financials outperformed. The dollar has gone up. Bitcoin slipped around 6%, while Ether plunged nearly 13% earlier on Friday. Crypto-related stocks like Riot Blockchain Inc. and Marathon Digital Holdings Inc. also fell. The Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index – which tracks some of the largest Asian companies listed in the United States – fell 3.6%.

US stocks saw their worst weekly outflow in more than three years as investors turned to more defensive assets amid China’s Evergrande debt crisis and the prospect of reduced Federal Reserve stimulus . Traders withdrew $ 28.6 billion from U.S. equity funds in the week to September 22 – the highest number since February 2018, according to a note from Bank of America Corp., which cites data from ‘EPFR Global.

The US economy has fulfilled the Fed’s conditions to start scaling back its asset purchases soon, according to two regional Fed bank chairmen.
