New Netflix True Crime Documentary takes on a bizarre story in the cryptocurrency world.
Netflix’s “Trust No One: The Hunt for the King of Crypto” explores the story of Gerald Cotten, founder and CEO of Canadian crypto exchange company QuadrigaCX, who died suddenly in 2018.
The documentary follows a group of Quadriga investors-turned-detectives digging into Cotten’s suspicious death and the millions of missing cryptocurrencies they believe Cotten stole from them, according to a Netflix tweet announcing the film.
Cotten encrypted and stored around $ 190 million of his clients’ Bitcoin caches and was solely responsible for the passwords needed to access those funds. Then the crypto millionaire died suddenly in India from complications from Crohn’s disease about three years ago. Cotten neglected to pass the passwords to the accounts, and by 2019, when investigators found Cotten’s digital wallets, all the money was gone. Customers have since struggled to regain access to their money, citing withdrawal issues and a lack of communication from the company.
The circumstances sparked speculation from some in the crypto community that the CEO faked his death and stole his clients’ money. Official inquiries into the matter have yet to produce definitive answers. A preview of the Netflix document contains footage that suggests the documentary will show investors a deeper dive into these plots.
The streaming service announced the feature alongside a list of upcoming real crime projects last week. Netflix has boomed with its real crime docuseries, from “Tiger King” to “Making a Murderer”. He led the pack of other streaming giants, producing the most projects in the true crime genre as of 2020.
‘Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King’ will be released sometime in 2022.
