Demand for digital coins in India is helping make a region spanning Central and South Asia and Oceania one of the fastest growing cryptocurrency markets in the world, according to Chainalysis.
The pace of expansion there is the fastest after the Middle East and much of Europe, with the Indian market increasing by 641% and that of Pakistan by 711% over 12 months. The Chainalysis report looked at trends over the year through June using a metric that estimates the total cryptocurrency received by a country.
Besides India, the report noted an increase in crypto adoption in Pakistan and Vietnam. The share of Indian activity on decentralized financial platforms was 59%, higher than that of the last two countries. Regional crypto-related venture capital investments have surged, according to the report.
Large institutional-sized transfers over $ 10 million in cryptocurrency account for 42% of transactions sent from addresses based in India, compared to 28% for Pakistan and 29% for Vietnam, according to the report. These numbers suggest that Indian cryptocurrency investors are part of larger and more sophisticated organizations. Bloomberg The past year has seen a number of twists and turns for the Indian crypto market, including on a regulatory front, with some reports that the country may try to ban or otherwise restrict crypto. Chainalysis pointed out that more recently it seems the government may simply favor taxation.
Celebrities from the nations are now drawn to the area, according to local reports. For example, Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan created non-fungible tokens – digital collectibles – and became a so-called brand ambassador for the CoinDCX exchange, India’s first cryptocurrency unicorn. .
