Bitcoin Phone wins 4th Bitcoin SV Hackathon in New York

The Bitcoin Phone “Voice Over Bitcoin Protocol” communications application topped the fourth Bitcoin SV Hackathon at the CoinGeek New York event. Chosen by a panel of four judges and a public vote, its developers will receive US $ 50,000 in BSV to further develop the technology.

The other two finalists, the TKS Pnt loyalty points application and the CATN8 streaming video platform, will also receive $ 30,000 and $ 20,000 respectively from the prize pool. The BSV Hackathon is presented by Bitcoin Association and supported by main sponsor Ayre Ventures.

Representatives from the three projects presented their product ideas to a panel of judges and a global audience on the first day of the CoinGeek New York event on Tuesday. In-person and virtual attendees had the chance to vote for their favorite through the Omniscape conferencing app.

The jury included Bitcoin creator Dr Craig S. Wright, nChain CTO Steve Shadders, Ayre Ventures CEO Paul Rajchgod, and author and TV personality Donny Deutsch.

Revealing their choices before the announcement, the panel was split 50/50 with Shadders and Rajchgod choosing TKSPnt, and Deutsch and Wright preferring Bitcoin Phone. This meant the winner was ultimately decided by public vote, with the poll tipping the scales in favor of Bitcoin Phone.

The judges also admitted that the choice was difficult, with Dr Wright adding that the second and third places were tied, in his opinion.

Each BSV Hackathon has a theme, and this time participants were instructed to “take advantage of BSV’s P2P features”. They have also been encouraged to create products that use P2P functionality not only for making payments, but also for other types of data applications.

The BSV Hackathon has been a key part of past CoinGeek events, and among its latest finalists and winners are some of Bitcoin’s best-known and most successful projects. The first two events were more “traditional” hackathons taking place over just a few days, but travel restrictions over the past two years have seen it evolve into a longer six-week event allowing collaboration between virtual teams of people. various countries.

This format has significantly increased participation rates. The fourth Hackathon took place from July to August 2021 and involved 623 participants in total, including 552 solo developers and 71 developers registered in teams. Shadders said in final presentations that they actually prefer the longer format event because attendees have a better chance to refine and improve their ideas before presenting them.

About the winners

Bitcoin Phone promises to do for Bitcoin what VOIP pioneers like Skype did for Internet Protocol. It uses some of the much vaunted but less used features of BSV such as nSequence, nLockTime, and Bloom filters to send voice data packets through BSV addresses, rather than IP addresses. Only the final transaction is sent to (and stored on) the blockchainBSV can have unlimited capacity but there is no need to clutter it with data that is not needed.

The Bitcoin Phone relay will ultimately be usable through any interface that connects to it, not just the one the developers plan to produce themselves. Canadian developer Joe Thomas said this is another potential data service that BSV (miner) transaction processors could provide. It plans to target the online counseling, tutoring and language learning markets.

TKS Pnt comes from Japanese developer Meta Taro, who pitched the idea as a solution to large store loyalty point card collections that fatten wallets in his homeland. Using BSV’s tokenization capabilities, it allows businesses to create, issue and manage their loyalty points while consumers can keep this stack of cards as a biometrically recognized digital wallet.

CATN8 developer Marcel Gruber pitched the innovative idea of ​​a video streaming platform that would allow viewers to “pay as you go” while watching streaming content. Once they click play, the service initiates a flow of micropayments to the creator. Like Bitcoin Phone, it could be used for online training as well as video chat rooms and quizzes.

The judges asked a number of tough questions in the final presentations, ranging from what could be done to address the copyright and prohibited content rules, to the market value of project names and how they solve particular technical problems. All said the finalists presented compelling ideas that should be further developed and reiterated calls for other potential developers to look at the more advanced data features of BSV to incorporate their ideas.
