The Twitter account owned by Tether’s CEO was deleted today following a USDT stablecoin controversy.

CEO’s Twitter account is gone

Earlier today, Bloomberg published a survey of the reserves supporting Tether’s USDT token. This report concluded that Tether was backing the coin with questionable assets, notably Chinese debt.

Now the Twitter account owned by Tether CEO Jan Ludovicus van der Velde has been deleted, either by himself or by someone with access to the account.

Van der Velde’s account was previously located under the handle @urwhatuknow. His latest tweet, posted on October 4, is still available as an archived page and anticipated the content of the Bloomberg article by several days. This message says:

[A]another dying financial slave magazine trying to find #Tether FUD in order to make money and delay its extinction for a few more days, stay tuned…. #dinosaurs

Even before his account was deleted, Van der Velde remained extremely elusive. Some have wondered if the CEO exists or if the name is just a pseudonym.

Although at least some media featuring the CEO has been found, Van der Velde has largely not engaged with the public on issues relating to Tether and its sister company Bitfinex.

Does the removal indicate a problem with the tether?

While Tether’s harshest critics believe the company is on the verge of collapse, such an extreme outcome is unlikely to result from Bloomberg’s briefing, especially since Tether has survived various controversies in the past.

Van der Velde’s account may have been deleted in order to avoid conflicts on Twitter. While the Bloomberg article sparked hostile messages, the CEO of Tether may have deleted his account for personal reasons. In fact, today’s deletion looks like a 2019 incident in which Bitcoin SV’s Craig Wright disappeared from Twitter following a huge controversy.

Yet given Van der Velde’s low profile, it seems unlikely that he would be personally targeted by anti-Tether groups. Additionally, other Tether executives, such as CTO Paolo Ardoino, remain active on Twitter.

Tether could retaliate against Bloomberg

Today’s events also resemble incidents in which leading crypto companies have engaged with the mainstream media.

Last year, Coinbase preemptively responded to a New York Times article criticizing its racial policies. In another incident, Binance sued Forbes for libel over a report on its regulatory tactics.

In this case, it seems likely that Van der Velde (or someone who manages his account) deleted past statements in order to set up a clean slate for a fight against Bloomberg, as his final tweet suggests.

It is possible that Tether plans to respond publicly to Bloomberg, or that he plans to challenge the media in court. This latter possibility is purely speculative at this stage.

Update: Tether responded to Bloomberg on his blog. This article will be updated if more statements are released.
