Even people whose work revolves around virtual assets want to start meeting in the real world again, and I did this last week at the TOKEN2049 crypto conference in London.
One of the main draws was billionaire Mike Novogratz, one of crypto’s most influential voices, who was set to headline the conference. But Galaxy Digital CEO’s recent trip to the Dominican Republic meant that COVID-19 restrictions went into effect unexpectedly, and he was unable to enter the UK. His session took place virtually instead.
The CEOs of Ava Labs and DeversiFi were among over 100 pillars of the crypto industry who delivered speeches or participated in panel discussions during the two-day event, covering topics ranging from regulation to the metaverse.
There were plenty of networking opportunities at the event, which aimed to find out what the industry will look like by 2049. Registration cost 999 ($ 1,361) and about half that price to raise. – early, with half of all invitation-only tickets, according to the organizers.

It was strange to meet two llamas near the breakfast room.

As these South American animals are quite rarely seen in the city, they apparently broke the ice and sparked a lot of conversation during the last TOKEN 2049 conferences.

A fully stocked bar just outside the main stage served free drinks for the evening networking event.
Gin and other strong spirits were offered alongside wine, beer, and blenders. I have noticed that a lot of people have been treating hangovers since Thursday night.

Industry experts discussed topics such as the European crypto scene, the foundations of Web 3, whether DeFi regulation is an opportunity or a threat, and how gaming has become blockchain’s best ally.
ByteTree founder Charlie Morris claimed bitcoin was too expensive. And Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky, who wore a t-shirt with ‘HODL’ on the front, said, ‘If you believe in bitcoin, why are you spending it?
