Michael Dell would be crypto ‘everywhere’ if he was a teenager today

In 1984, at age 19, Michael Dell started Dell Technologies in his University of Texas dorm with just $ 1,000. Today, he has turned the company into a tech giant with a market value of nearly $ 80 billion.

But if Dell were to start in 2021, it would likely move into a different kind of technology.

Asked about his thoughts on young people new to the crypto space, whether with digital coins or other assets like non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Dell says that “if I were a teenager right now, I would probably be finished with this. “

In fact, he’s personally invested in a few enabling blockchain technologies, the 56-year-old told CNBC Make It. “I think it’s super interesting. There’s still a lot to be determined in terms of investment and what type of investment for everyone, but I think it’s interesting.”

This also applies to his business. “We are helping a lot of customers to implement blockchain in some way at the enterprise level,” Dell says.

Growing up, Dell had many of the same hobbies and interests that today’s kids spend their time mining cryptocurrency or developing NFT projects. Just as children today can rebuild their computers on mine, Dell often demonstrated and rebuilt different technologies, such as phones and computers.

At 13, Dell worked randomly to save for an Apple II personal computer. Once he received it, he immediately took it apart to see how it worked, he wrote in his new book, “Play Nice But Win: A CEO’s Journey from Founder to Leader”.

“My parents encouraged him or laughed at him when I took things apart,” he says. “I guess a lot of parents would come home and if their kids took their TV or phones apart they might be like, ‘What are you doing? But my parents were much more tolerant of it. “

Dell has also collected items such as stamps and baseball cards, much like today’s kids enter the digital collectibles market through NFTs.

In addition to his talent for understanding microcomputers and microprocessors, Dell was also interested in finance and mathematics. Very young, he liked to follow different stocks, currencies and gold. He read business papers with his parents and even discussed Federal Reserve moves.

Overall, that’s why Dell thinks it would be “very into” blockchain technology if it grew up today.
