The last item on Steam’s list of things that shouldn’t be released on the platform reads “blockchain technology-based applications that issue or enable the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.”

The developers of Age of Rust, a first-person puzzle adventure game where players can collect in-game NFTs, wrote a Twitter thread regarding the change.

The team said they were direct with Steam that their game included NFTs and they were still being removed from the store.

“We chose to be frank about blockchain games and NFTs. As a result, we ultimately lost the battle with Steam. While I am disappointed with the removal of Age of Rust, the fact is rather than Blockchain games. as a whole are going to be removed. This is a setback for all. “

They continued the thread and said that “Steam’s point of view is that articles [NFTs] have value and they don’t allow items that may have real value on their platform. While I respect their choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future. “

While this move may harm some developers who have made such games, Steam’s decision likely stems from the need to protect its users from potential scams. The manpower required to review all new projects and their respective functionality related to cryptocurrency and NFT would be significant.
