“Coinstar, in partnership with Coinme, has launched a pilot project that allows its customers to use cash to buy bitcoin,” a Walmart spokesperson told CoinDesk. “There are 200 Coinstar kiosks located in Walmart stores across the United States that are part of this pilot.”
Coinme, a licensed cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, has already set up Bitcoin-enabled Coinstar kiosks in Florida, including 300 at Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Mas, Harveys and other Florida grocery stores, the company said. in April.
Each purchase incurs a transaction fee of 4% and a currency exchange fee of 7%, according to the Coinstar website. Coinstar was founded in 1991 and is best known for allowing customers to turn loose change into bills or gift cards.
Coinstar said it allowed Coinme to sell Bitcoin on its kiosks because it “recognizes that a diverse population has varying payment preferences. As the use of bitcoin expands around the world, our customers will seek greater access to the purchase and use of this new form of currency. Coinstar’s flexible platform and its cash acceptor on select kiosks allow Coinme to reach a large customer base to easily provide bitcoin locally, ”according to its website.
