Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has announced that he will convert part of his four-year, $ 134 million contract into bitcoin.
As part of this move, it will offer a total of $ 1 million in BTC to select Twitter and Instagram users.
Both agreements are facilitated by CashApp, the mobile payment service operated by Square.
In order to qualify for the promotion, users must respond to its post on Twitter or Instagram with a hashtag and their cashtag.
In total, 50,000 participants will win a prize of $ 20 in bitcoins. The winners will be picked at random.
I believe in Bitcoin and the future is bright. That’s why I’m teaming up with Cash App to take part of my paycheck in bitcoin today.
To make Bitcoin more accessible to my fans, I’m also giving a total of $ 1 million in btc now. Deposit your $ cashtag with #PaidInBitcoin and follow @CashApp pic.twitter.com/mstV7eal04

This is Rodegrs’ first public deal with a cryptocurrency-adjacent company. While the three-time MVP hasn’t made many public statements about the space, he has had a notable interaction with former ESPN presenter Kenny Mayne about it.
On Mayne’s farewell show on ESPN in May, the presenter berated Rodgers for encouraging him to buy crypto.
“You told me to get into the cryptocurrency game. I did. We’re down 40%,” Mayne said on the show. “Then I lost my job. Gretchen just wants a new quilt. [Expletive] you Aaron Rodgers.
“I love you Ken,” Rodgers replied with a smile.
At the time of this record, BTC had fallen significantly from its all-time high of over $ 64,000, set on April 14.
On the day of Mayne’s last show, the price of bitcoin was around $ 39,000, down about 39% from April 14.
While BTC remained roughly even from late May to August, the coin started a slow rise from that point on.
From August 1 to today, the value of bitcoin has increased by approximately $ 21,500 per coin.
For reference, an investment of $ 1,000 on this interval would have generated a profit of approximately $ 1,600.
It hit an all-time high of $ 66,964 on October 20 after the launch of a bitcoin ETF (BITO) on the New York Stock Exchange earlier in the week.
The price has since fallen to its current mark of around $ 61,000 on Monday afternoon.
The cryptocurrency space is growing in the NFL community.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady invested in a cryptocurrency exchange called FTX this summer and ran ads supporting the brand as a spokesperson.
In October, Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans inadvertently gave Brady’s 600th touchdown ball to a front row fan.
The fan then returned the ball. As part of the compensation package, the fan received a bitcoin. It was by far the most valuable commodity provided in the deal.
The fan also received a pair of season tickets, two Brady signed jerseys, a Brady signed helmet, an Evans signed jersey and Evans cleats.
The total value of all that Bucs stuff? About $ 35,000. Bitcoin? Almost double that.
Meanwhile, in May, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeted this in response to a stock market crash that brought BTC down near its six-month low of around $ 29,000.
These market conditions were of course brought up by Mayne in the aforementioned ESPN clip.
