Media coverage of Matt Damon’s role as spokesperson for Crypto.com has been widespread. He is the latest in a line of celebrities who cashed in during their cryptocurrency promotion.

First, there was the infamous debut of John McAfee raising the coins through his Twitter account. Then there were tech scions like Elon Musk and Mark Cuban who supported the industry. Then there were sports stars like Rob Gronkowski, Tom Brady and Trevor Lawrence.

While each of these names carried a bit of panache among his followers, Damon is arguably a different face for cryptocurrency integration.

John McAfee has been followed by the libertarian wing of the tech community. It appealed to a niche segment of a very technical community. Mark Cuban and Elon Musk, meanwhile, appealed to the wider tech community. They attracted the early adopters – the kind of people who were the first to buy a Tesla or try out the latest Apple gear.

Then came the sports stars, who started making people – those outside the tech class – pay attention to the blockchain revolution.

Notably, these stars started to emerge around the same time that more traditional traditional investment houses started paying attention to crypto. There is a reason. They saw the dollar signs.

They saw an emerging market that they could enter and find themselves a piece of the pie. There’s nothing wrong with that, and obviously Matt Damon is collecting his fair share for serving as a spokesperson.

The main difference between these two segments is that Gronk, along with financial institutions, felt that they could build their global brand through digital assets. They bought into the concept at the corporate level. Damon is brought in as an ordinary man, representing “Joe Six-Pack”.

With Matt Damon in the mix, it’s a signal that no matter who you are, you too can invest in this new asset class. You don’t have to follow the technology. You don’t need to understand how blockchain works. You don’t even have to know how to preserve NFT celebrity memorabilia for posterity.

Make no mistake, Matt Damon is not the equivalent of Mastercard or BNY Mellon joining the crypto movement. That’s not what Crypto.com is paying it for. They pay it to be the equivalent of your local credit union.

It’s a major juxtaposition to his status as a superstar. But he doesn’t get paid to be a superstar. It’s paid to show that digital assets are now so mainstream that one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces can safely board. And not just any face – Jason Bourne.

The message is that crypto is safe and accessible. So accessible that it should be offered by any financial institution, even that local credit union with a single branch – the one that ultimately allowed customers to use an online banking platform over the last few years of the Obama administration.

Matt Damon is the “grandmother” and “apple pie” of one of the largest and most common segments of the American population. It’s a heartwarming face that reassures you that digital assets are something we can all participate in. He says it’s no longer just an opportunity for the ultra-techie or the ultra-rich – instead, cryptocurrency is mainstream.

Blockchain, the technology behind cryptography, is transformative. Blockchain technologies are sure to change the way the world interacts with their money. Cryptocurrencies are here. Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are coming. And Jason Bourne says it’s going to be okay.
