The Bitcoin taproot is just around the corner

[ad_1]

The highly anticipated Bitcoin protocol update, Taproot, will activate when it hits block # 709 632, which is expected to occur around November 16. It will bring many improvements by replacing ECDSA signatures with Schnorr signatures, thus improving privacy, scalability, security and reducing costs. .

The Bitcoin community has been waiting for this upgrade for some time. Discussions and development of Bitcoin’s improvement proposals, BIP 340, 341, and 342, began in January 2020, completing implementations and merging with Bitcoin Core in late 2020, leaving the community with the final step in selecting a method for its activations and execution. this.

The recent Arcane Research report commented on the importance of this enhancement and its activation:

Taproot is the biggest Bitcoin network upgrade since SegWit’s 2017 upgrade. Activation was agreed in June this year after securing support for 90% of qualified blocks mined over a two-year period. weeks.

The taproot proposal was made by developer Gregory Maxwell, who was looking for ways to create a new smart contract-based trading system for Bitcoin. His original idea reads as follows:

I think this build will allow as much anonymity as possible for fixed-party smart contracts by making them look like the simplest payments possible. It accomplishes this without any overhead in the current case, by invoking sketchy or impractical techniques, requiring additional cycles of interaction between contract participants, and without requiring the durable storage of other data.

Taproot provides a new type of output with a single signing key form, thus changing transaction processes. This translates into improvements for higher privacy, lower fees, more flexible multiple signatures, and the availability of bitcoin to lock onto multiple scripts at once.

River Financial further explains that “since the Lightning Network relies on 2 of 2 multisig, Taproot makes it impossible to discern which transactions create Lightning channels.”

When spending bitcoin from a Taproot outlet, the user does not need to reveal all possible scripts that could have unlocked the bitcoin; only the script they actually used. In the majority of cases, Taproot users will likely use the public key payment option, which will allow them to keep any backup options they might have planned private.

A new way to buy Bitcoin

The update introduces Pay-to-Taproot (P2TR) as a new way to use bitcoin, which saves space on the blockchain by locking bitcoin to a public key instead of hashing the public key. For this to work effectively, schnorr signatures create a single master signature and public keys.

This opposes the peer-to-peer transaction in which two public keys and two signatures are generated, or multiple keys and signatures for multi-signature transactions, leading to a traceable transaction record on the blockchain and more usage. significant storage and costs.

To make Pay-To-Taproot transactions work, BIP 342 adds new scripts that “are used to verify Taproot’s spend and Schnorr’s signatures, and they’re collectively known as Tapscript,” says River. Tapscripts maximize the flexibility of P2TR spending, allowing for further upgrades, paving the way for Bitcoin to continue to adapt to needs and improve in the future.

As Bitcoin Magazine shows, using P2SH “has two main drawbacks. One is a lot of data, especially if there are a lot of conditions. And second, it’s bad for privacy. Everyone learns all the different ways the funds could have been spent, which can, for example, reveal what type of wallet was used and maybe even more.

Schnorr signatures offer better privacy and security than ECDSA signatures by relying on fewer assumptions and getting rid of signature malleability. Previously, when using multiple signature contracts, these were different from single signature contracts. Now, since they look alike, Taproot improves privacy.

The price of Bitcoin will most likely rise around Taproot’s adaptation, but this will only be the start of a more profitable period in which users will adjust to the new type of exit.
