If you are a designer who operates online, you probably face many challenges that are part of the designer “framework” that exists today. Meanwhile, the audience for content consumers seems to be growing steadily and the “creator economy” has become ubiquitous.
Emerging platforms, such as Substack or Patreon, have laid the groundwork for creator-focused platforms, but many creators, even those far from presenting controversial content, face daunting challenges with the ‘set of platforms today. However, the constraints for creators go far beyond platforms.
In an ever-changing landscape, let’s look at “bitcoin fixes that”?
News from the creator
Our colleagues at sister network NewsBTC recently highlighted how NFTs have already opened doors for creators, especially digital native artists. However, there is still a lot more on the horizon, especially for musicians, journalists and other creators.
A recent report, “From Dependence to Independence,” took a qualitative and quantitative approach to the challenges creators face in today’s landscape. While there is much to be said about the state of today’s “creative economy”, the report is undoubtedly worth reading; what about crypto and the potential impact it might have on creators? “Ignore the connection at your own risk,” the report read.
Where are the trouble? The white paper offers several ideas: “Algorithms are designed to benefit the platform, not the creator. Additionally, content could fall out of favor with advertisers, or platforms may make unnecessary decisions, often with few support systems in place.
A case study on this was crypto commentator Anthony Pompliano and his “Best Commercial Show” hosted on YouTube. Pompliano is a strong advocate of cryptocurrency and in recent months content has been mined from the platform with little reason for it being banned. Pompliano didn’t hesitate to generate more content from the platform’s decision, which was ultimately overturned.
This is magnified when we consider the figures revealed in “From Dependence to Independence”. A majority of creators’ income comes from advertising revenue share, and 65% of creators “feel overworked and / or underpaid”. As traditional ad dollars shift to more organic content that is often more suited to independent creators, there is arguably a brighter financial future. But today’s creators are exhausted and regularly face difficult battles.

As Ethereum gas prices optimize in the years to come, and new, scalable, gas-friendly competitors continue to gain a foothold in the NFT and social token markets, expect NFTs to continue to be a foothold. valuable tool for creators. | Source: ETH-USD on TradingView.com Crescent Case Study
The growing crypto @CroissantEth recently addressed this as well; How can creators monetize their work without sacrificing revenue, decentralization, interoperability, and most importantly, ownership of centralized platforms? The Crescent ditched Google Adsense and turned to memberships, and turned NFTs into web page keys using the unlock protocol. Users can access membership through NFTs and would not be billed from expensive Ethereum gas, as NFTs were also supported on other channels, such as Optimism, Arbitrum, and Polygon. In a growing conclusion, “NFTs give ultimate power to creators.”
However, it should be noted that at present some mediums are going to be more conducive to this kind of success than others. Music, for example, is a category that has been present in the NFT world, but not widespread. However, that doesn’t mean the potential isn’t there. It just means we’ll need more time for mainstream consumers to adjust.
Social Tokens
Another great example of this is brought to you by Reddit Product Manager Peter Yang, who has great insights into crypto and the economics of creators. In March, Yang published an article detailing different creators engaging with social tokens – mostly token memberships. Indeed, there is extreme versatility for creators across many, if not all, mediums from digital artists and YouTubers to musicians and adult content creators who can be successful with social tokens.
However, a token does not solve all problems. Yang explains that price fluctuations, the immense level of engagement, and potential regulatory impacts should all be considered when considering social tokens for creators.
NFTs have undoubtedly changed the lives of creators who once worried about their next meal. However, in the short term, we will still need to shift the social media paradigm to create a “play to win” gaming equivalent. The emergence of DAOs at the social level, yet to be seen on a large scale, could potentially be a game-changer. No matter where we land, compensation for people who build something, no matter how creative and fun, is deserved.
