Raptoreum mining a threat to AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 6000 series with large L3 cache

As graphics cards continue to be out of stock, crypto miners are now focusing on alternative mining options, such as CPU mining.

It seems that no PC component is safe from crypto mining anymore. After nearly a year of graphics card stock shortages caused by the pandemic, global supply issues and the cryptocurrency boom, miners have now focused on storage and processors. A new crypto coin called Raptoreum which is mined on processors is now rapidly gaining popularity.

Raptoreum mining is most efficient on processors with large L3 caches, such as AMD Ryzen 9 3000 or 5000 series processors. Even 3 year old Ryzen 9 3900X or 3900 non X processors are considered profitable due to their large 64MB L3 cache. Community-created profitability tables have shown that both processors are more efficient than the just launched Intel Core i9-12900K processor, which can deliver around 3700 H / s while Ryzen 9 3900 non-X 4600 H / s before any optimization. A more powerful 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X can deliver up to 5100-6800 H / s depending on configuration. But these processors aren’t exactly the most cost-effective options.

The developers of Raptoreum (RTM) used a mining method of the GhostRider mining algorithm, which prevents ASIC mining. It relies on a combination of Cryptonite and x16r algorithms and intense randomization techniques that require a large L3 cache.

The ROI in Raptoreum mining was calculated by a YouTuber Rabid Mining, who owns six Ryzen 9 3900x and two 3950x systems, at 284 days. The return on investment will change depending on the situation in the crypto market, but with the recent increase in the value of RTM, the return on investment has been even shorter.

The profitability of RTM mining on Ryzen processors could increase further once AMD launches its Vermeer-X series with a large L3 cache of up to 192MB. The company has so far made no commitment to shut down. mining crypto on its hardware, but at this point there isn’t much to do as the Ryzen 6000 series has already entered mass production and is expected to launch early next year.
