Tired of hearing people talk about cryptocurrency all the time? Well, we’ve got some bad news for you.

Yes, this is not a joke.

On Wednesday, Staples Center received a “formerly known as” and a brand new name was announced: the Crypto.com Arena, named “the world’s fastest growing crypto app” in the part of a brand deal presumably is worth quite a bit of money. The app is an encrypted exchange and debit card company that allows owners to earn cash back while also being a platform for exchanging coins and NFTs.

It should be noted that stadiums that change names as part of branded deals is not a new or rare thing – after all, the whole “Staples” track at Staples Center, was there as part of a 20-year agreement with the American office supply company of the same name. But there is always something funny about a name with “.com” at the end – maybe it would have sounded a little less shocking if it had simply been renamed “Crypto Arena”, but it It’s a little hard to imagine people saying the full name out loud – including the “dot com” bit – when discussing their plans to see a game this weekend.

As you can probably imagine, not everyone was very happy with the name change:

wow they did, they found a name worse than Staples Center

There were also jokes about “The Crypt”.

Sorry, but https://t.co/k7iihFjINP Arena is as normal as sponsored building names are going to be from now on. We’re in 20, 30 years of stuff called “Mutant Ape Auditorium” and “Dogecoin College of Dentistry”.

Yet there were also defenders:

Reading the answers. I had no idea people were so passionate about office supplies.

According to the LA Times, the name of the arena won’t just change – “3,300 square feet will become a dedicated Crypto dot com ‘activation space’ offering crypto-centric interactive experiences for sports or music fans.” Sure.

There is a good chance that the name will be pushed around more for a while, but people will slowly start to get used to it. Hey, they’re still 20 years old.
