Acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino is being sued by Miramax, a Hollywood film production and distribution company, over the auction of an NFT series linked to “Pulp Fiction”, one of the most popular films. popular films from the director. The conflict lies in Miramax’s interpretation of the original contract between the parties, arguing that the sale of NFT does not constitute a publication of part of the script.
Miramax sues Quentin Tarantino
Hollywood film company Miramax has sued famed director Quentin Tarantino for the upcoming auction in a Pulp Fiction-themed NFT series. Tarantino has announced that he will be auctioning a series of never-before-seen items from the film in NFT form, including the famous handwritten ‘Royal with Cheese’ script scene. The auction would use a blockchain called the Secret Network, which would allow the content of these NFTs to be secret until the item is sold.
Miramax claims that while Tarantino has the rights to any print publication of the script, NFTs are not one of them. The trial specifies:
The proposed sale of a few pages of script or original scenes as TVN is a one-time transaction, which does not constitute publication and in any event does not fall within the intended meaning of “print publication” or ” scenario publication ”.
The lawsuit further explains that the right to sell NFTs is owned and controlled by Miramax.
Tarantino strikes back
Bryan Freedman, Tarantino’s attorney, disputed the validity of Miramax’s claims, stating that the director had the right to sell “NFTs of his handwritten script for Pulp Fiction and this clumsy attempt to prevent him from doing so will fail.” . Williams also pointed out that revealing details of Miramax’s contract with Tarantino will tarnish the company’s reputation. This means Tarantino plans to fight these allegations in court.
This is one of the first high-profile cases involving NFTs and Hollywood productions to take to court. Many other celebrities and artists have already issued and released NFT Drops to take advantage of the NFT craze that ensued earlier this year to open up new alternative revenue streams. In that sense, Miramax attorney Bart Williams said Tarantino’s announcement dilutes the value of Pulp Fiction’s intellectual property.
Williams said:
This ad hoc effort devalues the NFT rights of “Pulp Fiction”, which Miramax intends to maximize through a strategic and global approach.
