Staples Center in LA to be renamed Crypto.com Arena over Christmas

The naming rights to the Staples Center arena in LA – home of the LA Lakers and LA Clippers of the NBA and the LA Sparks of the WNBA, as well as the LA Kings of the NHL – have been sold to the applications company Crypto.com cryptocurrency under a 20-year agreement that takes effect on December 25, 2021.

The new arena name, effective Christmas Day, will be Crypto.Com Arena.

The deal was announced Tuesday in a joint statement from Crypto.com and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), which owns the venue which, for at least the next 5 weeks, will continue to be known as Staples Center.

The site’s new name and logo will debut at the Lakers-Brooklyn Nets game on Christmas Day with all internal panels replaced. However, the much less embarrassing exterior signs will remain in place until June 2022 at the latest.

Staples Center, named after the big box office supply store, opened in 1999. Since then, it has hosted 19 of the last 21 Grammy awards ceremonies, as well as many major concerts and sporting events.
