Main supermarket chain in Croatia showcases crypto payments – Bitcoin News

Customers of Croatia’s largest supermarket chain will be able to pay for their orders in cryptocurrency in the retailer’s online store. The company plans to soon offer the crypto payment option also in its physical stores across the country.

Konzum allows buyers in Croatia to pay with 9 cryptocurrencies

The Croatian supermarket chain with the most stores, Konzum, now accepts cryptocurrency for groceries and other items sold through its online shopping platform. As of December 1, customers can purchase any of the 12,000 listed products using nine major cryptocurrencies: bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), bitcoin cash (BCH), EOS, DAI, XRP, XLM, and USDT and USDC stablecoins.

“The introduction of cryptocurrency payments is another indicator that Konzum is constantly monitoring global trends, introducing innovations and setting the standard in the retail industry,” said Uroš Kalinić, board member of Konzum administration responsible for finance and IT. Noting the chain’s decades of history as a leader in terms of business performance and technological achievements in Croatia, the representative added:

We are proud to be leaders in another rapidly developing field that is dictating the future.

Cryptocurrency payments were enabled by Croatian payment processor Paycek, a platform developed by local fintech company Electrocoin. Integration with Konzum’s online store allows buyers to select the desired part and complete payment by scanning a generated QR code.

Once the transaction is finalized, buyers will receive a confirmation email from the Paycek system and Konzum will send them an invoice. As crypto prices can be quite volatile, Paycek will guarantee users a temporarily fixed exchange rate.

The new payment method is currently only available for online orders. However, Konzum said in the announcement released Wednesday that it intends to introduce crypto payments to its stores across Croatia in the near future as well.

Paycek has so far facilitated the adoption of cryptocurrencies by various other companies across the country. In September, Croatian e-bike company Greyp Bikes integrated encrypted payments into its online billing system to enable enthusiasts to purchase high-tech cycling products using digital coins. Earlier this year, more than 40 Tifon gas stations started accepting cryptos using Paycek’s services.
