Whistleblower Edward Snowden Issues Crypto Gambling Warning, Highlights Potential ‘Unethical’ Practices

[ad_1]

Whistleblower Edward Snowden has said that the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in crypto games has certain consequences.

In a new interview with Parachains, a YouTube channel focused on Polkadot and Kusama, Snowden says he’s against monetizing gaming platforms that use NFTs because they use a false sense of scarcity.

“We have people who kind of try – maybe they don’t even try to – but the end result of what they do is that they inject an artificial sense of scarcity into a post domain. -shortage. I think it’s actually an inherently anti-social drive here.

The former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee says gamers seeking a virtual escape can potentially be at a disadvantage by the NFT-based gaming business model.

“If you think of the world where people retreat to play their games, where they live in a bare, cold box, if they are even lucky enough to have a house in an overpriced city where they spend everything. their time at work, they come home exhausted.

They make their meal cheap, then they turn on their device to escape it all and then into their digital world, where they’re on a beautiful island, they build a beautiful house, and they want to change the color of the wall, and you have to. pay $ 19.99 for the wall or for a token for you to roll over to maybe re-color your wall. There is something horrible, odious and tragic about this for me.

Snowden’s comment follows the exponential rise in gambling altcoins and the crypto-based metaverse. According to Snowden, the crypto industry risks facilitating unethical practices.

“I think the community should really try to bend the arc of development by not injecting an unnecessary artificial shortage entirely for the benefit of a certain class of investors in these post-rarefaction areas.

One of the promises, one of the privileges of technology, is that it frees us from material limits that exist only in material space. Trying to reimpose matter in the intangible space, I think it’s a bit unethical.
