The recently renamed Square crypto branch (now Block) demonstrated its Lightning Development Kit (LDK) in an effort to turbocharge the Bitcoin network.
The team at Jack Dorsey’s Spiral released a video on December 7 presenting the capabilities of Bitcoin Lightning and the Lightning Development Kit (LDK).
LDK was designed to allow developers to seamlessly connect their applications to the network on mobile devices and point-of-sale terminals.
LDK supports native APIs using Rust, C, Swift, Java, and Kotlin coding languages. This allows developers to customize their wallet app for their users in their language of choice while removing the need to separate Bitcoin and LN wallets.
In the video, the former Twitter CEO described the LDK as a program that “makes it easy for any developer in the world to build a portfolio.”

The video features a Jack Dorsey puppet interacting with salespeople and store owners by paying for services with Lightning Network (LN). He uses his LN mobile wallet app to pay for a nose piercing and a movie ticket while the video is periodically shown to Team Spiral talking about the merits of Bitcoin and LN.
Spiral, previously known as Square Crypto, has been developing Bitcoin wallet solutions since its inception in 2019. In addition to LDK, Spiral is working on the Bitcoin SDK which enables cross-platform mobile wallet interactions.
Lightning is a layer two scaling solution for Bitcoin that, according to Haley Berkoe, Project Manager Spiral, “turns Bitcoin into a real payment system.”
Spiral’s Conor Okus expects his LDK to increase the adoption of Bitcoin and LN by “providing a way for people in different parts of the world … to store value and engage in economic activity.” .

The product release comes at a fortuitous time for Lightning users as network nodes are at an all time high. The latest reading from Bitcoin Visuals shows that there are 18,905 nodes with active channels on the Lightning Network.
Over the past 3 months, the total number of nodes has increased by 23% with 3,534 new nodes added. The LN currently has a network capacity of 3,285 BTC, which is roughly $ 166 million according to 1ML.
