It turns out that there was some bidding war surrounding Cboe Global Markets’ acquisition of the spot currency exchange and ErisX derivatives last month.
Cboe had to push back attempts to buy Coinbase and Gemini, according to a source familiar with the matter. Competition behind the acquisition led Cboe to offer $ 500 million in cash and $ 500 million in term payments, the source said.
The high figure of $ 1 billion contrasts sharply with Cboe’s assertion in a press release that “the purchase price is not financially significant.”
Coinbase and Gemini were both particularly interested that ErisX already had approval from the Nationals Future Association (NFA), which regulates the market. Coinbase has requested the same certification. While the company waits, ErisX has reportedly come up with “a way to offer options now,” the source said.
A Coinbase spokesperson declined to comment, as did a spokesperson for ErisX. Representatives for Cboe and Gemini did not return requests for comment.
ErisX is expected to change its name to Cmoe Digital once the deal is done, which is expected to take place in the first half of next year, pending regulatory approval.
Cboe initially offered Bitcoin futures in 2017, but stepped back from space in March 2019, citing low trading volumes as the price of Bitcoin plummeted.
Cboe also formed what the company calls a “digital advisory board”. Some of these parties are in the process of acquiring minority stakes in Cboe Digital. Among them: DRW, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy Digital, Interactive Brokers and Robinhood.
