Bitcoin Core Developer Samuel Dobson Decides ‘Time To Go’

[ad_1]

Developer Samuel Dobson announced Thursday evening via a series of tweets that he was stepping down as maintainer of Bitcoin Core after 3 years. His reason being that he “can no longer devote the necessary time, as the end of my doctorate approaches”.

I am officially stepping down as the maintainer of Bitcoin Core.

Serving as the Portfolio Manager for the past three years has been an absolute privilege, and I want to thank my incredibly generous sponsor, John Pfeffer (@jlppfeffer) for his support throughout the process. / 1

As the maintainer of the Bitcoin Core wallet, Dobson had direct access to the cryptocurrency code on GitHub, with permission to approve changes and make improvements to the Bitcoin software. He was also responsible for ensuring the security of the protocol.

When asked if there was a chance that he would someday return to BTC Core development, Dobson told Cointelegraph that his PhD is his main focus at the moment. And while he hasn’t decided what to do after graduation, he’s not interested in developing other cryptocurrencies.

Dobson said he was especially grateful for the support of his “incredibly generous godfather” John Pfeffer, without whom he could not have prioritized part-time work on Bitcoin.

He appealed to the Twitter community to consider financially supporting a developer due to the nature of open source projects. He also told Cointelegraph:

“Bitcoin Core development has obviously increased tremendously since it was conceived with Satoshi. As an open source project, it will always be in an interesting and more difficult position in terms of funding, but things like Brink, Chaincode, Spiral and sponsorship Direct from the developers through GitHub have helped a lot.

Bitcoin has already lost two maintainers since October. With Dobson’s departure, the number of developers with direct access to the Bitcoin code fell to 5, according to an updated list on the Bitcoin Forum.
