Bitcoin Mining Company Cleanspark to Launch 20MW Immersion Cooling Initiative

[ad_1]

Cleanspark, a sustainability-focused bitcoin mining company, has announced that it will launch a 20MW initiative at its Norcross bitcoin mining facility where miners will be submerged cooled. The company will accommodate more than 5,900 miners in this facility, which will be submerged in tanks of a biodegradable liquid. Cleanspark says it will help them save energy and increase the hashrate they get from miners.

Cleanspark to use immersion cooling for a new facility

Cleanspark, a sustainability-focused bitcoin mining company, has announced that it will start using alternative and more efficient methods to cool its miners. The company has revealed it has set up a 20MW immersion cooling initiative at its already established Norcross bitcoin mining facility, being one of the first mining companies to implement such technology on a large scale.

The company will organize nearly 6,000 miners who will be submerged in 180 liquid tanks distributed throughout the mining installation. Cleanspark will not have to modernize to install the necessary tanks for this, an advantage of immersion cooling. Each tank will contain 33 Antminer S19j Pro miners.

The move will allow the company to achieve better performance from miners and at the same time save energy, reducing energy consumption by 20%, according to a press release.

Immersion cooling Vapor recovery

Although liquid cooling is not new to the mining industry, with some small miners successfully building their own immersion extraction systems, it is only recently starting to make sense to implement this solution in mining operations at larger scale. It has to do with the benefits these companies can now achieve by implementing this new technology in already existing data centers.

Cleanspark CEO Zach Bradford said:

We are constantly looking for ways to make our operations more sustainable and productive while achieving maximum performance. Deploying environmentally friendly cooling technology that also increases the profitability of our bitcoin mining operations was an obvious choice for us.

The company acquired the Norfolk data center in August, hoping the initiative would be built before the end of the year. It’s also not the only project that major mining companies recently announced using immersion cooling. Riot Blockchain, a Nasdaq-listed mining company, recently announced that it would cool half the capacity of its new facility in Texas with immersion cooling, with 46,000 miners involved in the operation.
