NFT and real housewives. Even stocks and The Bachelor. Crypto and Kardashian. These are just a few examples of the topics you’ll likely hear in any episode of CAKE for BREAKFAST, a weekly news podcast hosted by Jessica Devine that covers the worlds of pop culture and finance.

If these subjects might seem like strange bedfellows … well, maybe they shouldn’t. While the once sharp lines between “serious topics” (i.e. people interested in hearing crypto tricks at the same time as they catch up with Erika Jayne’s latest drama.

CAKE for BREAKFAST, owned by Spotify Originals, celebrates the idea that an interest in reality TV is just as valid as an interest in the stock market and that you can be smart and serious while obsessed with gossip celebrities.

Before starting CAKE for BREAKFAST, Devine worked on Wall Street as a trader for banks like UBS before entering the world of hedge funds. But, she says, when she got into finance, “there was no [media] outlet that spoke to me. She continues: “I was a recent graduate working in finance who didn’t really know what the stock market was yet. I watched different shows that might help me get up to speed, but it was all either CNBC [shows] or Entertainment Tonight, no jump ball.

Recalling her own experience, Devine set out to create something to fill that void, something that “was fun but also informative.” In addition to reviewing weekly news, whether it’s the end of Britney’s tutelage or the current price of Bitcoin, Devine also attracts guests from the entertainment, social media and business worlds. She has interviewed people like Alli Webb (the founder of Drybar), Perez Hilton and Lala Kent (Vanderpump Rules).

CAKE for BREAKFAST’s audience is predominantly made up of young women between 28 and 34 (84% of listeners identify as female and 78% are under 35) and one of Devine’s hopes for the show. is that it will encourage more women to jump into the financial conversation, however they see fit, whether it’s investing in stocks, buying bitcoin, learning about NFT or follow financial news. According to a recent Gallup poll, 60% of American men own stocks, compared to 53% of American women. But this disparity is changing rapidly. A recent study by financial services firm Fidelity found that more and more women, especially Millennials, are starting to invest, and many have been inspired by the economic turmoil during the pandemic. What’s more, the study found that women “outperformed their male counterparts by 40 basis points or 0.4%” when it comes to their return on investment.

As Devine wants to point out on CAKE for BREAKFAST, “You don’t need a finance degree, a Patagonia vest, or a lot of money to start investing in the market. I think a lot of people hear the words “stock market” and block it or dismiss it saying, “Oh, I don’t know how to invest” or “my husband is doing this for us”. Well, it’s not as overwhelming as you might think! I have helped a lot of people just set up a Robinhood or Fidelity account to start trading. It takes fewer steps than creating a Venmo account. You can also trade with as little as $ 1 if you just want to play before putting in real money.

Ultimately, Devine wants to make finance more inclusive and accessible to everyone, whether it prompts you to buy stocks or just be able to join in on an NFT conversation dinner. “The idea of the show isn’t to give a talk or teach about finance, it’s a place to be up to date with the latest news so you can be well informed before your next date, meeting or social gathering, ”Devine explains. She adds, “Nowadays, if you can’t talk about the basics of crypto, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. “
