The world’s largest digital asset exchange – Binance – reportedly intends to work with Indonesia’s richest family – the Hartono brothers – to establish a cryptocurrency business on the island. The company would allow the company to enter a developing country with a population of around 273 million, many of whom do not have access to financial services.
Binance eyes Indonesia
The leading digital asset trading platform has faced regulatory backlash from many watchdogs in recent months. As a result, Changpeng Zhao – CEO of Binance – claimed that his company will change its structure and no longer act as a decentralized platform without “no headquarters or borders”.
In the days following its announcement, the company was linked to several countries where it could establish a global base, including Ireland and France. Interestingly, CZ revealed that his company would even apply for a license from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK.
According to a Bloomberg report from December 10, the exchange is now looking to expand its global reach by establishing a presence in Indonesia. People familiar with the matter have revealed that Binance is in talks with PT Bank Central Asia, controlled by siblings Budi and Michael Hartono (Indonesia’s richest family) and PT Telkom Indonesia (China’s largest telecommunications provider. country).
The company aims to start a cryptocurrency business in Indonesia, as such a partnership will encourage wider adoption of digital assets in the country.
Despite its large population, many are unbanked and have little access to other forms of core funding. That said, Binance’s potential settlement could provide options for those in need, while Indonesia’s most influential businessmen could get involved in the cryptocurrency industry.
Discussions and terms of the agreement are still ongoing. A Binance spokesperson declined to comment directly on the initiative:
“We support the sustainable growth of the blockchain industry on a global scale and we are constantly looking for business opportunities in each country,” he said.
In turn, Telkom Indonesia has considered jumping on the cryptocurrency bandwagon by partnering with top players in the industry through its venture capital arm MDI Ventures. Ahmad Reza – a senior executive at the company – confirmed the rumors.
Indonesia’s crypto environment
The Indonesian government does not present itself as a pro-crypto authority. In addition, its central bank is willing to issue a digital form of its national currency in order to “fight” private cryptocurrencies. According to Bank Indonesia, this financial product will be more “credible” than bitcoin or altcoins.
The institution further explained that a CBDC will be monitored by authorities, while private digital assets could harm the country’s financial network as there is no control over them.
The National Council of Ulema (MUI) – Indonesia’s leading body of Islamic scholars – is also against the asset class. Not so long ago, he called all operations in the industry “haram” or prohibited.
