STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl is the latest video game to embrace blockchain technology and NFTs. Players will be able to spend cryptocurrency to obtain unique items, as well as digitize themselves in the dystopian action game as a non-playable character (NPC).

The news comes just a week after Ubisoft announced its own NFT integration, called Ubisoft Quartz, which will bring NFTs to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. The integration of the STALKER 2 blockchain goes much deeper, although it also raises more questions.

The new features are part of a program called STALKER Metaverse, which is hosted on the NFT DMarket platform. GSC Game World CEO Evgeniy Grygorovych, the game’s publisher, describes the project as the “first AAA game with a unique meta-experience”. A press release notes that the feature “will use blockchain technology to allow the community to own a piece of STALKER 2”.

STALKER Metaverse will start auctioning NFT Drops in January, and users can start signing up this month. Another “secret” drop will take place in February. It’s unclear exactly what players will buy. A press release mentions that they can get unique items that won’t affect the game or give players a benefit. They can be redeemed even before the game launches in April.

DMarket notes that items will be able to travel through chains and platforms. He notes that they will be usable in at least one other game in GSC Game World. The Marketplace says it is working with other publishers to make purchased items usable in more games.

The most unique aspect of this is that the drops will give players a chance to become NPCs in the game. Those who purchase a “metahuman” spot will have their image digitized in-game by photogrammetry. This NPC will appear in the game for all players. For now, only one Metahuman spot will be available as part of the January drop. Spaces will be limited and players will be able to redeem their right to become a metahuman before the game launches.

When it comes to pricing, DMarket is low key at the moment. Auction information will be revealed along with additional auction details. DMarket and GSC Game World will donate a portion of the proceeds received to charity as part of a social responsibility program.
