The crypto regulatory scene in Japan is considered to be strict, while also being relatively open to fintech innovation. To this end, the country’s SBI group [Strategic Business Innovator Group] announced the launch of a crypto fund for investors.
Not “Matcha” Teen for nothing
The SBI press release said,
“This time, the SBI Group will start managing the ‘SBI Cryptocurrency Asset Fund (Tokumei Kumiai No. 1)’, which is the first in Japan … to invest directly in cryptocurrency assets, for general investors.”
According to a detailed notice published by the company, the seven cryptos on offer are Bitcoin, XRP, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Chainlink and Polkadot.
So how will this work? The SBI said the maximum number of incumbents is 499 and noted,
“This product is an investment of 5 million yen or more in units of 1 million yen.”
One million yen was around $ 8,795.08 at the time of publication.
The request to buy period runs from December 17, 2021 to January 31, 2022. During this time, the contractual period is between February 1, 2022 and January 31, 2023. According to the extended announcement, the composition of the crypto fund can be rebalanced in case an asset becomes extremely dominant.
A translation of the same noted document,
“Also, in order to smoothly sell the cryptocurrency assets, we may temporarily loan the cryptocurrency assets for sale to the cryptocurrency exchange company for a short time, but this is about a technical measure and not a profit target. “
That said, it’s worth noting that in the press release, the SBI Group highlighted the launch of Bitcoin Futures ETFs in the United States and the popularity of NFTs as a use case for blockchain.
Now just “Udon” a minute
A crypto fund is good. But on the other hand, Japan faces pressure to step up the development of its own CBDC. It comes as the Chinese digital yuan is widely adopted across the country, with even international brands joining, ahead of the smooth launch slated for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
In fact, Japanese Minister of Economic Security Takayuki Kobayashi also admitted the need for more action on a CBDC. The minister cited national security as one of the reasons for this. In early December, he noted,
“We need to think about what might happen to Japan’s national security if other countries move forward with the CBDC.”
He added,
“Japan needs to speed things up to be ready to issue a digital yen at any time.”
