Bitcoin (BTC) enthusiast Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has bet big on the willingness of international crypto companies to settle in his country, opening the door for crypto companies to settle in the country. And there are tentative signs its long-awaited crypto exodus has started.
As the regulatory pressure on crypto firms continues to increase across the globe, Bukele appears poised to provide businesses with a secure space in which to operate without the threat of constantly shifting regulatory goals. That seems to be his thinking behind the Bitcoin City project, which promises to speed up residence permits for internationals and withhold all forms of tax except VAT on sales.
And it looks like Bukele has its very first taker, in the form of an Argentinian crypto firm named Lemon Cash. According to El Diario de Hoy, the company has set up a Salvadoran subsidiary called Lanin Pay, which allows it to be “exempt from reporting the movements of its users’ crypto-assets” to tax authorities in Argentina. Lanin will take care of the safekeeping of the cryptocurrencies for the company, but Lemon has claimed that the move will have no impact on users of his platform.
In an email, the firm told its customers:
“None of these changes will impact the way you use Lemon Cash on a daily basis. Your operations will not be affected in any way and you will be able to continue operating with it. [fiat] pesos and cryptocurrencies, just as usual.
The media outlet explained that with custody of the crypto passing through the platform now taken over by a foreign company, Lemon no longer had any obligation to transfer data on customers’ crypto transactions to the Federal Revenue Administration. public. . All fiat and debit card transactions will still be subject to tax reporting, but as long as trading is in crypto, the tax authorities seem to have been left out of the picture.
What Argentina’s tax authorities feel about this decision does not seem clear at this stage. However, it looks like the move is not entirely unprecedented.
The outlet reported that Buenbit, another Argentinian platform that offers ‘Lemon-like services’, uses a UK-based intermediary to hold its crypto-assets, which means its clients enjoy the same reporting exemptions. tax .____ Read more: Salvador’s Bitcoin Chivo wallet with sanctions, ”says NGO – Lack of transparency hinders Bitcoin adoption in El Salvador, critics say
