As reported by The Verge, the hack took place via Fractal’s official Discord server. Taking advantage of the fact that Team Fractal had created a hype for their first airdrop – a first release of NFT for first-time users – the hacker posted a message in Discord’s announcement channel with a link to an alleged drop of NFT.

According to an analysis by Tim Cotten, most Discord users immediately realized that the post was a fake, but those who wanted to participate in the NFT broadcast clicked on the site’s ‘mint’ button, which asked for 1 SOL to hit each NFT. The users who linked their Solana wallets then found all of their accounts emptied.

The Fractal team shut down the ad channel completely after just five to 10 minutes, Cotten reports, but 373 users were still victims of the hack, collectively losing over 862 SOL worth about $ 150,000.

Fractal has released an official response to the hack, saying it will fully compensate anyone who falls victim to the scam, while also boasting that only 0.3% of its community fell into the bogus post. The hack is now linked to exploits involving Discord webhooks, and Fractal said it is now in contact with Discord Trust and Safety to conduct a full audit of its Discord security.

The Fractal team also used it to remind their subscribers to be careful about anything crypto related. “If something is wrong with the crypto, please do not continue, even if at first it seems legitimate,” the blog post read. “We have to use our best judgment as there is no ‘cancel button’ in crypto.”

While Fractal reminded his fans that his initial airdrop will be free for first-time users, and verified by founder Justin Kan on Twitter, he also warned that “the next feat could be much bigger” and that Fractal may not. be able to compensate. future losses.
