Credit unions in the United States are seeking to own crypto assets following a regulatory guidance letter, Bloomberg reported. The National Credit Union Administration has said that credit unions can work with third-party crypto service providers. Credit union groups aim to provide crypto services directly to their members.
Credit unions in the United States are seeking permission to hold crypto assets like bitcoin, after regulatory clarification that they can offer cryptocurrency services by partnering with third parties, according to a Bloomberg report.
Credit unions with federally insured deposits can work with third-party crypto service providers to enable their members to buy, sell and hold digital assets if certain conditions are met, National Credit said. Union Administration in a letter published last week.
The guidelines give credit unions the assurance of forming partnerships, clarifying what many thought was possible under existing rules, Lance Noggle, senior director of payments and cybersecurity advocacy at Credit Union National, told Bloomberg. Association, in a report released Tuesday.
A broader goal of credit unions is to provide crypto services directly to their members in the same way that banks can do for their customers, Noggle said. In July 2020, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, as regulator of banks, gave them approval to offer custody services for cryptocurrency. More recently, he said that banks must first get written permission from their supervisory office.
The National Association of Federally Insured Credit Unions is also seeking explicit approval from credit unions to provide cryptocurrency custody services, Bloomberg reported.
The National Credit Union Administration said in its letter that it would assess a federally insured credit union’s relationship with third parties offering crypto services and related technologies in the same manner as any other relationship with third.
“This includes an FICU exercising good judgment and performing due diligence, risk assessment and planning when it chooses to present or bring together an external supplier with its members,” the NCUA wrote.
The cryptocurrency market has skyrocketed this year in terms of valuation, as the adoption of crypto services and the exposure of institutions and retail investors accelerated. The market was valued at around $ 2.4 trillion on Thursday after reaching a valuation of $ 3 trillion in early November.
