Top crypto winners and losers in 2021

[ad_1]

The year 2021 has undoubtedly been a bull market with Bitcoin (BTC) raising the all-time highest price bar on several occasions this year. But not all crypto assets have performed equally well. There were a number of losers in addition to the majority of the winners in terms of prize wins.

Since the start of 2021, the total crypto market cap has grown 190% from just under $ 800 million to over $ 2.3 trillion today. It hit a record high of just over $ 3 trillion in early November.

Top 3 winning crypto in 2021

The top ten cryptos in terms of market capitalization was a little different as of January 1, 2021, as it contained Litecoin (LTC), Chainlink (LINK), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). These dropped out and made way for Solana (SOL), USDC and Avalanche (AVAX) by the end of the year.

Dogecoin (DOGE)

Dogecoin has skyrocketed this year, mostly thanks to Elon Musk’s clandestine social media posts. On New Years Day, DOGE was priced at just $ 0.004 and largely ignored by the majority of crypto traders. DOGE had its first small push in February after the premiere of what would be a number of subsequent Elon pumps.

DOGE prices really took a wild ride in April and May when they jumped over 1,100% to an all-time high of $ 0.731 on May 8, pushing the crypto market cap charts up to fourth place.

Musk touted DOGE’s virtues as a payments network in June, which resulted in another round of FOMOs for memecoin.

DOGE has been down this epic pump since May, against both Bitcoin and USD. But all the additional mainstream media it has, besides the major trading platform listings, has still given the Shiba Inu-inspired joke piece a monumental 3,800% gain so far this year. In terms of BTC, DOGE gained 2100% over the year, going from 168 satoshis to 3,696 sats in mid-December.

Solana (SOL)

The native corporate blockchain token Solana also had a record year in terms of earnings. At the start of 2021, SOL was priced at just $ 1.52, at the time of writing it was trading just over $ 150. This is an epic gain of over 9800% in less than a year.

SOL hit an all-time high of $ 260 in early November, but retreated as markets began to correct at the end of the year. This massive move gave SOL a fifth place in the market cap charts after peaking at fourth. Against BTC, SOL gained 6.473% on the year.

Major investments and increased adoption following the surge in Ethereum transaction prices gave momentum to Solana, which has also been touted as an “Ethereum killer.” In June, Solana Labs raised $ 314 million through a private token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain Capital.

Earth (MOON)

The native token of the decentralized financial payment network Terra was also briefly in the crypto top ten. LUNA started the year at around $ 0.65 and was largely unknown to mainstream retail traders.

Prices rose in March and May, but they didn’t really take off until August, when a massive pump lifted LUNA to an all-time high of $ 77.73 on December 5. At the time of writing, LUNA was trading up to 8,515.% year-to-date. In satoshi terms, LUNA is up 5.815% this year against BTC.

The rapid expansion of partners on the Terra ecosystem has been largely responsible for the upward price action.

A few others are also worth mentioning for making impressive gains this year, including Avax from Avalanche up 2330% year-on-year, MATIC from Polygon, which jumped over 12,000%, and Binance Coin. (BNB) making 1,271% this year.

Top 3 crypto losers in 2021 Internet Computer (ICP)

Amid a world of hype, Dfinity’s Internet Computer project exploded onto the scene this year after 5 years of largely secretive development. It promised an Internet revolution replacing the legacy trillion-dollar Internet and computer industry by allowing developers to install their code directly onto a “public Internet” without having to rely on third-party hosting companies.

Frenzied speculators for the Next Big Thing in crypto scooped up ICP tokens when they were listed on major exchanges in mid-May, sending prices skyrocketing to a very rapid all-time high of $ 700 le May 10.

Since then, ICP prices have all but collapsed, falling to an all-time low of $ 24.29 on December 4, a painful 96% drop from its peak just 7 months earlier. It also lost 93% against Bitcoin in terms of satoshis.

EOS (EOS)

The former crypto darling many touted for killing Ethereum has actually done very little in terms of price movements this year as those around him have risen.

EOS was already out of the top 10 by market cap on January 1 and continued to drop in the charts throughout the year. EOS prices only gained 15% over the year, while others were in three and four digits, so we see this as a loser in the grand scheme of things.

Block.one’s once high-profile token was trading at $ 3.25 at the time of writing, having slumped to 50th by market cap. It is currently down 86% from its all-time high in April 2018 of $ 22.71 and lost 22% against BTC during the year.

At the beginning of November, members of the EOS ecosystem expressed their dissatisfaction with the direction taken by the network.

Currency (XMR)

Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero has also fallen sharply in the market cap charts this year as a number of major exchanges have written off digital assets that offer anonymity.

XMR prices have rallied just 17% this year and are nowhere near their all-time high of $ 524 in January 2018. Currently trading at around $ 183, XMR has fallen 66% from that high, resulting in a drop to 49th place in room ceiling tables. Monero has lost 30% against Bitcoin since the start of the year.
