Matt Damon’s crypto ad gets toast on Twitter

Fortune may favor the brave – but Twitter is not promoting Matt Damon’s crypto advertising just yet.

The Oscar-winning “Good Will Hunting” actor became the face of Crypto.com last year. The Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange app and platform allows users to buy, sell, and store cryptocurrencies. He signed Damon as part of a $ 100 million advertising campaign spearheaded by “Inception” cinematographer Wally Pfister, with ads set to air in more than 20 countries. And in another big move, he recently paid $ 700 million to rename Los Angeles Staples Center – home of the NBA Lakers and Clippers – the Crypto.com Arena.

“I’ve never made an endorsement like this,” said Damon, who is also an investor in Crypto.com. He’s told Bloomberg he’s ready to ‘roll or die with the economy’ – but he’s not quitting his job as a filmmaker, either.

It might just as well be. Her first Crypto.com spot, “Fortune Favors the Brave,” which has been featured in movie premieres, NFL games and shared online since last fall, hasn’t been as well received on Twitter that his box office hits like the “Bourne” movies and “The Martian” were by viewers.

Damon celebrates daring risk-takers throughout history “who embrace the moment and engage.” It passes by what appears to be a mountaineer on top of Mount Everest, and the Wright Brothers soaring into the sky at a one-minute spot, before stopping near a red planet, presumably Mars.

“And in these moments of truth, these men and women, these mere mortals – just like you and me – as they look overboard, they calm their minds and strengthen their nerves with four simple words that have been whispered. by the intrepid since Roman times: Fortune favors the brave, “Damon says. Then” Crypto.com “appears on the screen.

Here are some of the more viral reactions to his sales pitch.

This led to “Matt Damon” trending on Twitter in the United States on Monday afternoon.

Crypto in general also had a rough start in 2022, with most of the biggest cryptocurrencies falling during morning trading on Monday, including Dogecoin DOGEUSD, -2.84% and Bitcoin BTCUSD, -2.44%.
