Tesla has beaten bitcoin in the past year – just like 124 others in the S&P 500

It might shock bitcoin fans: 125 components of the S&P 500 have made investors more money in the past year than they have.

One is Tesla TSLA, which started 2022 with a 13.5% increase after the electric vehicle maker announced 2021 deliveries that nearly doubled in volume in 2020; it has gained 64% in the last year. But the same goes for less glamorous stocks like Marathon Oil Corp. MRO and Extra Space Storage Inc. EXR.

For bitcoin BTCUSD, the volatility over the past year has been staggering – or at least for investors unaccustomed to the action in the world of virtual currencies. From the intraday peak of $ 69,000 from Nov. 10 to Jan. 3 at 4:30 p.m. ET, when it traded at $ 46,036.40, bitcoin fell 33%.

The S&P 500 “bitcoin beaters”

From January 4, 2021 to January 3, 2022, 125 stocks in the benchmark S&P 500 SPX saw their prices rise more than bitcoin’s 44.2% gain. If dividends were included, the total returns for some would be even higher.
