New Delhi: In 2021, El Salvador, a Latin American nation led by President Nayib Bukele, became the first country in the world to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender.
The bills will now help the Salvadoran government establish the legal and financial framework for the Volcano Bonds, a billion dollar Bitcoin bond issue.
The country’s administration is in the process of creating 20 bills that would serve as a legal framework for them to move forward with plans to issue Bitcoin bonds.
According to statements released by the Secretary of the Treasury, the laws would address regulations for issuing cryptocurrency securities to ensure the viability of Bitcoin bonds, which were suggested in November 2021.
Edul Patel, CEO and co-founder of Mudrex, said the government plans to pass bills, which would serve as a legal framework providing legal certainty and incentivizing investors to subscribe to bitcoin bonds.
In addition to Bitcoin Bonds, the Government of El Salvador has stated that Bitcoin Bonds will fund the creation of the proposed Bitcoin City.
There are a lot of investors who want to get exposure to Bitcoin. Country-backed Bitcoin bonds are a much safer alternative to direct investment in Bitcoin, said Amit Nayak, CEO and co-founder of Sahicoin.
According to the plans proposed by President Bukele, the city of Bitcoin will provide “digital and technological education, geothermal energy for the whole city and efficient and reliable public transport”.
The president has pledged to channel $ 1 billion raised through the bond offering that will be used to fund the Bitcoin City plan. These bonds carry a nominal interest rate of 6.5%.
With Bitcoin City, El Salvador plans to usher in a new era of digital education, sustainable energy reserves, and green mining. El Salvador announced this project a few weeks ago at the end of 2021.
Market experts call the Bitcoin City project a visionary step for the government of El Salvador, which will be a paradigm shift towards the regulations and legal framework for crypto.
Patel of Mudex said it will serve as a benchmark for other countries planning to implement regulatory guidelines for cryptocurrencies.
The timeline for the creation of this legendary city is still under wraps, but the crypto space will turn into something more comprehensive, experts say.
Echoing similar views, Nayak said he would closely monitor how the plan unfolds. “The Bitcoin City announcement will definitely attract more blockchain innovators, it could be a valley of silicon for future manufacturing,” he adds.
