Mozilla started 2022 believing it was making a casual appeal for cryptocurrency donations on Twitter. Mozilla was wrong.
Jamie Zawinski and Peter Linss replied to the tweet a few days later and called the browser maker.
“Hello, I’m sure whoever runs this account has no idea who I am, but I founded Mozilla and I’m here to say fuck you and fuck you,” Zawinski said. “Everyone involved in the project should be ashamed of this decision to join forces with Ponzi scammers who are cremating the planet.”
Linuss was no less stigmatized in his criticisms.
“Hey Mozilla, I guess you don’t know me either, but I designed Gecko, the engine your browser is built on. And I’m 100% with it. [Zawinski] So. What. The. Real. Shit. You were supposed to be better than that, ”he said.
Before the end of the week, Mozilla was changing course.
“Last week we tweeted a reminder that Mozilla accepts cryptocurrency donations. This has led to an important discussion about the environmental impact of cryptocurrency. We are listening and taking action,” he said. .
“So, starting today, we’re reviewing whether and how our current cryptocurrency donation policy aligns with our climate goals. And while we conduct our review, we will be suspending the ability to donate crypto. -cash.”
Mozilla said decentralized technology is always going to be an area to explore, but that “a lot has changed since we started accepting crypto donations.”
The browser maker said its review will be transparent and update regularly.

There has been growing concern about the power consumption involved in the process of computers calling out numbers at each other, which is also referred to as proof-of-work cryptocurrency mining.
In November, Swedish authorities called for an EU-wide ban on the practice.
“It is currently possible to drive a mid-size electric car 1.8 million kilometers using the same energy it takes to mine a single Bitcoin,” Swedish regulators said.
“That’s the equivalent of forty-four world tours. Nine hundred Bitcoins are mined every day. It’s not a reasonable use of our renewable energy.”
Earlier this week, Kosovo banned cryptocurrency mining to reduce energy use in a bid to alleviate short- and long-term energy shortages.
The annual consumption of electricity used to power Bitcoin would be 134 TWh, roughly the same output as Argentina, and enough to offset the global carbon savings resulting from the use of electric vehicles.
Chromium-based Vivaldi browser responded to a user on Wednesday asking it not to follow Mozilla.
“We are really not crypto and NFT fans. [sic]”said Vivaldi.
